今月のテーマは
Could you share what you find attractive about the US, what you dislike, and favorite places, restaurants, shops, or anything else you recommend.
今のトランプ政権は大嫌いだけど、アメリカに対しては好印象を持っておられる方が多かったようです。
9歳から15歳までサンフランシスコに住んでいたメンバーからは子供のころの思い出として、綺麗な街並み、芝生がちゃんと手入れされた大きな公園でピクニックを楽しむ人々の光景、大きな空間でセントラルヒーティング完備の快適な家などのお話を聞きました。
また音楽関係ではアメリカ発祥のブルースやジャズ、カントリーが好き、という方がいました。
釣り好きのメンバーからはハワイ島でのカジキ、スポーツフィッシングの話しがありました。 ただかれこれ30年くらい続けているけれども、最近はカジキの個体数が減ってきて、大半はキャッチアンドリリースで釣果を持ち帰ることはないそうです。 環境の変化があるようです。
色々な赴任先を経験したメンバーはオーストラリアなどは、欧米白人社会の中で自分のような日本人はお客さま扱いのようなところがあったけど、アメリカは英語が話せるとすぐさま近所の人みたいにフラットな扱いになるところが好きだったと言ってました。
好きな場所については色々ありましたが、２名がボストンを挙げていました。落ち着いた街並みや安全で平和な感じがしたところ、また夜街を歩いていても不安を感じないところがよかったそうです。ハーバード、マサチューセッツ工科大学、バークレー音大など大学が多く、学生の街だからかもしれないとのことでした。
レストラン、食事については色々コメントがありました、量が多すぎる、けどハンバーガーは美味しかったとか。
また楽しかったゴルフ
の思い出を語ってくれたメンバーからは、
いいところが色々ある国だけど、銃社会だけは悪い点だと思うとのコメントがありました。本当にそうですね。
This month’s theme was: “Could you share what you find attractive about the US, what you dislike, and your favorite places, restaurants, shops, or anything else you recommend?”
Although everyone disliked the current Trump administration, I felt many had a generally positive impression of the United States.
One member who lived in San Francisco from age nine to fifteen shared childhood memories of the city: beautiful streets, large parks with well‑maintained lawns where people enjoyed picnics, and comfortable homes with spacious layouts and central heating.
Another member talked about music, saying they loved American genres such as blues, jazz, and country.
A fishing enthusiast shared stories about marlin and sport fishing on the Big Island of Hawaii. He has been doing it for nearly thirty years, but recently the marlin population has declined, so most catches are released rather than taken home. It seems environmental changes are affecting the area.
A member who has experienced various overseas assignments said that in places like Australia, he often felt treated as a “guest” within a predominantly white Western society. In contrast, in the United States, as long as you can speak English, people treat you just like any other neighbor — a flat, equal kind of interaction that he really appreciated.
As for favorite places, several were mentioned, but two people chose Boston. They said the calm nice atmosphere, sense of safety and peace, and the fact that they could walk around at night without feeling uneasy were appealing. With universities like Harvard, MIT, and Berklee College of Music, it may feel safe because it’s very much a student town.
There were many comments about food and restaurants — portions being too large, but hamburgers being delicious, and so on.
A member who shared fun memories of golfing in the US also said that although the country has many wonderful aspects, the gun culture is the one thing he considers a serious downside. I really agree on that.
